Coastal Costumes
Woman’s work costume
c. 1930s – Private CollectionUsually, the Women’s Work Costumes, used daily for the various tasks, were composed of a coutil skirt, a striped apron, a chita blouse (traditional Portuguese cotton fabric), a cotton or satin scarf and a pair of clogs. Most of the time, these women went barefoot. In the simplicity of this way of dressing, we highlight the robustness of the fabrics. In the various works related to the sea, this way of dressing was common in Castelo do Neiva and among the fishmongers, salt and cod drying workers from Ribeira de Viana and other parishes.
