Seaweed Harvester / Fishing Costume

1ª Metade do Séc. XX – Coleção Museu do Traje

In Carreço, women dedicated themselves to harvesting seaweed and fishing on the rocks by the sea. For these jobs, women from Carreço used an inner skirt made of tow or coarse white cloth, ending with a small bar of plain or square stripes. With this outfit, they also wore a Chita blouse (traditional Portuguese cotton fabric) and a straw hat. The striped apron was only used on the way to the beach or back home.
