Seaweed and Fishing
V. Castelo – Monserrate
Of all the locations in the municipality of Viana, which have a strong symbiosis with the sea, the Ribeira de Viana stands out because this point was, and still is, a place essentially linked to fishing. In the work of Baldaque da Silva, we can see the dimension of this harbour and the type of fishing carried out by the fishermen of this quarter. This author also describes the seaweed industry made in this place (Baldaque da Silva, 1892). However, as previously mentioned, this was a job done essentially by farmers. If on the north coast, the rafts of Anha harvested the seaweed, in the other places, this product was bought by farmers of the municipality. We found the register in the Municipality Codes previously mentioned, the existence of fishgarths on the coast of Monserrate.
