Seaweed and Fishing

Castelo do Neiva

About the seaweed harbours on the coast of Viana, Baldaque da Silva ends in Castelo do Neiva. About this place, this author not only indicates the number of people, rafts and seaweed cartloads but also describes the clothing and tools used in this work (Baldaque da Silva, 1892). Already in the 20thcentury, Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira, Fernando Galhano and Benjamim Pereira, in “Actividades Agro-Marítimas em Portugal”, describe the evolution that this parish built with the sea, especially in the enlargement of the fishing, agricultural and marine activities, and the creation of a new “fishermen’s quarter” near the beach, where once existed the seaweed sheds (Veiga de Oliveira, Galhano and Pereira, 1975).
