Seaweed and Fishing

Afife

As described by Antonio Arthur Baldaque da Silva in 1892, in the parish of Afife, the peasants dedicated themselves to harvesting seaweed on the beach and went to sea in open wooden boats, the masseiras (Baldaque da Silva, 1892). From the description of Father António Carvalho Costa, in the “Corografia Portuguesa” (previously mentioned), of 1706, to the “Monografia de Afife” prepared by Avelino Ramos Meira in 1945, these publications attest to the ancestral existence of fishgarths in the parish of Afife. According to the latter author, there were about 16 fishgarths in Afife (Ramos Meira, 1945).
