Seaweed and Fishing
V. do Castelo – Monserrate
There was also the practice of seaweed harvesting in the coastal strip of the parish of Monserrate (Viana do Castelo), where the Ribeira quarter is located. However, the connection between this place and these agricultural and marine practices was established with people from outside this parish.
As described by Baldaque da Silva in 1892, rafts from Anha would come to collect the seaweed from the coast of Monserrate to Rego de Fontes. Although, as recorded in testimonies of several people from the municipality of Viana do Castelo, besides these rafts, groups of women also came from the same parish, on foot, to Praia Norte to harvest seaweed.
