Seaweed and Fishing

Castelo do Neiva

In Castelo do Neiva, the sheds for the tools used in seaweed harvesting and the rafts and boats were distinct from the same structures found in the other parishes along the coast. These sheds were covered with clay tiles on the dunes of this parish, built in wood (Veiga de Oliveira, Galhano and Pereira, 1975).

As previously described, and according to Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira, Fernando Galhano and Benjamim Pereira (1975), by the middle of the last century, some families moved from the interior of the parish to the seaside, they transformed the wooden sheds used to support the agricultural and marine activities into their dwellings. With this flow of people to the coast, the residential nucleus was created near the beach, where the people who dedicated themselves to seaweed harvesting and fishing lived.
