Fishgarths
The use of fishgarths was a common practice on the coast of Viana from the Middle Ages until 1940, with references appearing from the Inquirições of 1258 until the 1940s. In this last decade, and after Portuguese legislation aimed to protect the target fishing species, the demolition of existing fishgarths was ordered (Magalhães and Batista, 2006). The use of fishgarths fits into the rural population’s agricultural and marine activities associated with seaweed harvesting, crab fishing, and other fishing on the coast. Ivone Magalhães and João Paulo Baptista (2006) described the fishgarths consisted of fishing grounds built by men on the rocks, which took advantage of the tides to catch fish (Magalhães and Baptista, 2006).
