Seaweed and Fish Sheds / Storage Houses

Alongside the seaweed and fishing activities, we have identified the construction of sheds/storage houses in the parishes of the coast of Viana do Castelo, which, in the past, were used to store the equipment used to harvest seaweed as well as for fishing.

As previously mentioned, these spaces were also used to store boats and rafts. Depending on the parishes, the way these structures were built varied. Thus, while in Castelo do Neiva, these buildings were made of wood, in Amorosa (Chafé), Areosa and Carreço, the “sheds” were already built in stone. Generally, both had clay tile roofing.

As mentioned before, in Castelo do Neiva, as in Amorosa, the site of the old seaweed storage houses/sheds gave way to new housing nuclei in the respective parishes, so these structures are no longer visible in the local landscape. However, some of these structures can still be found on the northern coast.
